Veteran Nepali Actor Sunil Thapa Passes Away at 68 After Cardiac Arrest

Kathmandu, February 7, 2026 – Renowned Nepali film actor Sunil Thapa, celebrated for his powerful performances in Nepali cinema and notable roles in Bollywood, has passed away at the age of 68.

Thapa died early this morning at Norvic International Hospital in Thapathali after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. He was rushed to the hospital unconscious, where an ECG conducted at 7:44 am confirmed his death, according to hospital sources.

Mohan Niraula, president of the Film Artists Association of Nepal, confirmed the news, stating that Thapa succumbed to a heart attack. Thapa, who resided in an apartment in Shankhamul, Kathmandu, leaves behind his wife, a son, and a daughter.

Over a decades-long career, Thapa made his mark in Nepali films with iconic roles, such as the villainous Rate Kaila, and expanded to Bollywood with appearances in movies like Mary Kom and web series like The Family Man. His versatile acting, often in antagonist roles, earned him widespread acclaim across Nepali, Bollywood, and Bhojpuri cinema.

Tributes poured in from across the region, including Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), who mourned the loss of a “true legend” whose legacy would inspire generations.

The Nepali film industry and fans are in shock, with many remembering Thapa’s contributions to cinema and his enduring impact on South Asian entertainment. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
