AIIMS Network Expands from 6 to 23, Bolstering India’s Healthcare Landscape: Health Minister JP Nadda

New Delhi, February 7, 2026 – Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda announced that the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) network has grown from just six to 23 institutions, establishing a robust framework for world-class healthcare across the nation.

Speaking at a convocation ceremony in Faridabad on Friday, Nadda highlighted India’s significant strides in health indicators, including maternal and child health, as well as efforts against communicable and non-communicable diseases.

The minister praised the country’s tuberculosis control program, noting that the World Health Organization (WHO) has commended India’s achievements. TB notifications have surged, and the decline rate is double the global average.

This expansion, part of broader healthcare reforms under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, aims to enhance access to quality medical education, research, and patient care. The network’s growth from a single AIIMS in Delhi to 23 nationwide symbolizes equitable healthcare delivery.

Recent developments include inaugurations at AIIMS Kalyani in West Bengal, where Nadda unveiled key facilities like a cardiac cath lab and MRI unit, underscoring the government’s commitment to advanced infrastructure.

Experts view this as a milestone in transforming India’s public health system, with further expansions potentially on the horizon as announced in recent budgets
