New Delhi, February 11, 2026 – The Indian government has reiterated its pragmatic approach to crude oil imports, stating that the country will continue sourcing from the most affordable and high-quality suppliers that are not under international sanctions.

In a briefing to a parliamentary panel, officials emphasized that Indian oil companies will factor in geopolitical realities while prioritizing cost-effectiveness and quality. This policy ensures energy security for the world’s third-largest oil consumer amid volatile global markets.

The statement comes as India navigates shifting dynamics in oil trade, including discounted supplies from Russia and emerging opportunities from other regions like the Middle East, US, and potentially Venezuela following recent sanction relaxations.

Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry sources highlighted that this flexible strategy has helped stabilize domestic fuel prices and saved billions in import bills over recent years. India imports over 85% of its crude oil needs, making diversification and value-for-money critical.

Experts note that while Russian oil has been a major source due to attractive discounts, the government remains open to alternatives to mitigate risks from sanctions or supply disruptions. This balanced stance supports refining efficiency, as Indian plants are configured for a mix of grades.

The reaffirmation underscores India’s sovereign decision-making in energy procurement, focusing on national interest without aligning strictly to external pressures. As global oil dynamics evolve, this approach is expected to guide imports in the coming months.
