New Delhi, February 19, 2026 — The Delhi Police have arrested a 36-year-old man from Jammu and Kashmir for allegedly impersonating an officer of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and duping vulnerable families on the pretext of providing government jobs.
The accused, identified as Mudassar Ahmed Mir, a resident of Pulwama, was apprehended near the Red Fort by a patrolling team from the Kotwali police station.
Suspicious Vehicle Leads to Arrest
The incident unfolded when a police patrolling team noticed a black Hyundai Santro with a Jammu and Kashmir registration number parked under suspicious circumstances near the Delhi Chalo Park behind the Red Fort.
Upon checking the vehicle, officers found Mudassar accompanied by a minor boy. When questioned about his identity and presence in the area, Mudassar produced an identity card claiming to be a field officer of the NIA. However, scrutiny by the officers revealed the card to be a forgery.
Targeting Vulnerable Families
During interrogation, a disturbing modus operandi emerged. Police investigations revealed that Mudassar had been targeting economically weaker families in the Kashmir Valley.
False Promises: He allegedly convinced the family of the minor boy that he could secure a job for the teenager in Delhi.
Financial Fraud: He took an advance payment of ₹3,000 from the boy’s father—a mason who had recently suffered a paralytic attack—with a promise of more money upon job confirmation.
The Journey: Mudassar and the minor left Pulwama on February 12 and had been staying at a guest house in the Jama Masjid area.
No Terror Link Found
Given the sensitive nature of the impersonation (NIA) and the location (Red Fort), a joint interrogation was conducted by the Special Cell, Intelligence Bureau (IB), and Military Intelligence. Officials confirmed that no terror angle has been found so far. The accused appears to be a “cheat” exploiting the aspirations of unemployed youth.
“A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for cheating and forgery. We are investigating if he has defrauded other families,” a senior police officer stated.
