‘Swayangsiddha’ Initiative Empowers Bagdogra Locals Against Child Abuse and Trafficking
Bagdogra, March 8, 2026 — In a crucial step toward eradicating social crimes at the grassroots level, a comprehensive ‘Swayangsiddha’ awareness program was successfully conducted at the Hetmuri Singhijhora Gram Panchayat in Bagdogra.
The community initiative, held on Friday, March 6, was organized jointly by the Women Police Station under the Siliguri Police Commissionerate and the prominent NGO, Shakti Vahini. The event specifically targeted local residents, Panchayat members, and frontline health workers within the Phansidewa Block.
Focus on Child Rights and Anti-Trafficking
The core objective of the state-backed Swayangsiddha program is to build a robust, community-led defense against severe social offenses. During the session, police officials and NGO representatives educated the attendees on several critical issues, including:
The rising threats of human trafficking in the region.
Prevention of child marriage and child abuse.
Fundamental child rights and the legal protections available to vulnerable minors.
Empowering Frontline Workers
A significant portion of the audience consisted of local ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers and Panchayat members. Given their direct and daily connection with rural households, empowering these grassroots workers with the right knowledge is seen as a vital strategy for the early detection and prevention of domestic and child-related crimes.
The educational briefings were followed by interactive sessions, allowing locals to voice their concerns, ask questions, and learn how to safely report suspicious activities to the Bagdogra Police Station. Authorities emphasized that an informed and vigilant community remains the strongest weapon against exploitation and trafficking networks.
