PM Modi Launches ₹33,500 Crore Infrastructure Push in Delhi; India’s First ‘Ring Metro’ Becomes Operational

Massive Boost for National Capital: PM Modi Inaugurates New Delhi Metro Corridors and GPRA Housing Projects

New Delhi, March 8, 2026 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for multiple mega-development projects worth approximately ₹33,500 crore in New Delhi on Sunday. The massive infrastructure push is primarily aimed at rapidly expanding the Delhi Metro network and modernizing government housing complexes across the capital.

Addressing a public gathering, PM Modi emphasized that the newly launched projects will drastically improve urban connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance the overall ease of living for millions of residents in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Delhi Gets India’s First ‘Ring Metro’

A major highlight of the event was the official inauguration of two highly anticipated Delhi Metro corridors, developed at a cost of over ₹18,300 crore.

The Prime Minister flagged off the 12.3-km Majlis Park–Maujpur-Babarpur corridor on the Pink Line. With the addition of these eight elevated stations, the Pink Line has expanded to 71.56 km, officially completing India’s first fully operational “Ring Metro” network. The circular route will seamlessly connect massive residential hubs in North and East Delhi.

Additionally, the 9.9-km Deepali Chowk–Majlis Park extension on the Magenta Line was opened to the public. This elevated stretch includes seven stations and reaches a towering height of 28.36 meters at certain points, making it one of the highest sections in the entire Delhi Metro system.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta lauded the expansion, noting that the integrated network will cut down daily commute times and heavily reduce vehicular pollution in the capital.

Future Expansions: Phase V-A Foundation Laid

Looking ahead to the next phase of urban transit, PM Modi also laid the foundation stone for three new metro corridors under Phase V-A, covering a combined distance of 16.10 km:

  • The underground Central Vista Corridor (R.K. Ashram Marg to Indraprastha).

  • The Golden Line extension (Aerocity to Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal-1).

  • The Golden Line extension (Tughlakabad to Kalindi Kunj).

These upcoming routes are specifically designed to streamline travel between South Delhi, Noida, and the airport.

Major Boost to Government Housing

Beyond transit, the Prime Minister inaugurated and laid foundation stones for projects worth ₹15,200 crore under the General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) Redevelopment Plan.

Marking International Women’s Day, PM Modi personally handed over the keys to female allottees at the newly built GPRA Type-5 quarters in Sarojini Nagar. The broader redevelopment initiative spans across Sarojini Nagar, Netaji Nagar, Kasturba Nagar, and Sriniwaspuri.

Operating on a self-sustaining financial model, the massive housing overhaul will replace aging low-rise colonies with high-rise complexes. Once completed, the project will yield over 9,350 modern residential flats for government employees and generate approximately 48 lakh square feet of new administrative office space.
