Tragedy in Sikkim: 55-Year-Old Woman Killed, 3 Injured as Severe Thunderstorms Uproot Trees

Gangtok / Tarai 24 Regional Desk, March 15, 2026 — Sudden and severe weather conditions wreaked havoc across Sikkim on Sunday, resulting in the tragic death of a 55-year-old woman and leaving three others injured as strong winds and heavy rainfall uprooted massive trees across the state.

Tragedy Strikes in Tumin-Lingi

According to the Gangtok district police, the fatal incident occurred in Rakdong Kafer, located under the Tumin-Lingi Constituency. The victim, identified as Kala Devi Chettri, was caught outdoors in the midst of a violent thunderstorm. Authorities stated that the intense winds and driving rain caused a large tree to collapse, striking her directly on the head and resulting in her death.

Passenger Vehicle Crushed in Pakyong

In a separate but equally terrifying incident in the neighboring Pakyong district, a massive tree collapsed onto a passenger vehicle at Chota Singtam. Officials reported that three individuals inside the vehicle sustained injuries due to the crushing impact of the fallen tree amid the heavy downpour. Local residents and emergency responders quickly rushed to the scene to extract the victims and transport them to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care.

Statewide Disruptions

Several parts of the Himalayan state experienced abrupt and drastic weather changes throughout Sunday. Widespread reports of gale-force winds, intense rainfall, and sudden hailstorms emerged across multiple districts. The extreme weather has damaged numerous trees, blocked roads, and severely disrupted normal movement and daily life in several localities.
