Jalpaiguri, West Bengal – In a targeted operation against narcotics cultivation, officers from Rajganj Police Station under the Jalpaiguri District Police raided a site in the Silatpara area of Kantipara village, Kukurjan Gram Panchayat, resulting in the detection and destruction of approximately 150 illegal cannabis plants.

The raid, carried out on January 14, is part of an intensified ongoing drive by the district police to eradicate unlawful drug activities that threaten public health and safety, particularly among the youth. Authorities emphasized that illegal cultivation and trafficking of narcotic substances continue to pose a serious societal risk in rural pockets of North Bengal.

According to an official statement released by Jalpaiguri District Police on social media, the operation underscores their commitment to strict and sustained action against all forms of drug-related crimes. “Illegal cultivation and trafficking of narcotic substances pose a serious threat to society, especially to the youth,” the statement read. “Jalpaiguri District Police remains firmly committed to taking strict and sustained action against all forms of drug-related activities.”

This latest action follows a series of similar raids in the district. Just ten days earlier, on January 4, a team from Maynaguri Police Station destroyed around 100 illegal cannabis plants in another rural location, highlighting the persistent efforts to curb such cultivation. In December 2025, multiple operations, including one by Kotwali Police Station, led to the uprooting of additional plants as part of the broader anti-cannabis drive.

Local experts note that illegal ganja (cannabis) cultivation thrives in the fertile Dooars region of Jalpaiguri due to its remote terrain and economic vulnerabilities, often luring farmers into the illicit trade. However, these police initiatives aim to dismantle such networks and promote alternative livelihoods.

The police have appealed for public cooperation, urging citizens to share any information related to illegal drug cultivation, trafficking, or sales. “Public cooperation is crucial.”

No arrests were reported in this specific raid, but investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible. Community leaders in Jalpaiguri have praised the police’s proactive approach, expressing hope that it will deter future violations and contribute to a healthier environment for the region’s youth.
