Siliguri, West Bengal – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee laid the foundation stone for the ambitious Mahakal Mahatirtha temple project in Matigara, Siliguri, today, marking a historic milestone for spiritual and infrastructural development in North Bengal.
The state government has allocated Rs 344.2 crore for the temple complex, the highest such funding for any temple in Bengal, underscoring its importance as the largest Mahakal Temple in the state. Initially announced with a Rs 250 crore budget, the project aims to create a grand spiritual hub inspired by the revered Mahakaleshwar Temple, fostering tourism and cultural heritage in the region.
Key attendees at the event included prominent figures such as Udayan Guha, Bulu Chik Baraik, Goutam Deb, and Anit Thapa, along with local dignitaries, devotees, and community leaders. In her address, the Chief Minister highlighted the temple’s grand features, including the world’s tallest Mahakal idol/statue at 216 feet, a Mahakal Museum, a cultural hall, 12 Abhishek Linga, and replicas of the 12 Jyotirlingas. She emphasized that the complex will have the capacity to accommodate up to 1 lakh devotees, transforming Siliguri from a mere transit point into a major destination for religious pilgrimages, tourism, and business.
The project, first announced by the Chief Minister in October 2025, has generated widespread excitement among locals and devotees, who view it as a boost to Siliguri’s spiritual landscape and economy. Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb, who reviewed preparations earlier this week, attended the event and highlighted its significance for the region.
Traffic restrictions and diversions were implemented by Siliguri Metropolitan Police from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM today to manage crowds and ensure security. Key areas like Parivahan Nagar More, Fulbari Bypass More, and Bhaktinagar Checkpost saw holds on heavy and medium goods vehicles, with exemptions for perishables, LPG, army vehicles, and ambulances. Similar measures are in place for tomorrow’s programs in Jalpaiguri.
