Guwahati, February 8, 2026 – Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today unveiled findings from a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe, accusing Congress Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi of involvement in a “global conspiracy against India” through alleged connections to Pakistan.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Sarma described the matter as a critical national security issue, not a personal dispute. He highlighted three key figures: MP Gaurav Gogoi, his British wife Elizabeth Colebourn Gogoi, and Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, whom he labeled “anti-India.”
The CM raised pointed questions about Gogoi’s 10-day stay in Pakistan, demanding clarification on his activities and how he obtained permissions to travel from Lahore to Islamabad and Karachi shortly after arrival. “Who permitted and facilitated Gogoi’s travel?” Sarma asked.
Sarma alleged that Elizabeth Gogoi had worked with LEAD Pakistan, a Pakistan-based organization, alongside Sheikh. He claimed she maintains a bank account in Pakistan, which was omitted from Gaurav Gogoi’s election affidavit, and has visited the country nine times. After the Modi government assumed power, she reportedly proposed bypassing the central government to engage directly with local administrations.
The CM also questioned how Sheikh was allowed to visit India 13 times during the previous government’s tenure. He accused Gaurav Gogoi of misleading journalists and revealed that the MP’s two children are not Indian citizens, with only one family member holding Indian citizenship. Sarma further commented on the family’s religious affiliations: the MP is Hindu, his wife and daughter are Christian, and his son has no religion specified.
Adding to the allegations, Sarma claimed Elizabeth Gogoi’s salary continued to be paid from Pakistan even while she worked in India. He stated that the SIT has uncovered “explosive” findings, which will be forwarded to the Central Government for a deeper probe. “A central investigation could reveal more facts,” he said.
Sarma linked Gogoi’s post-Pakistan parliamentary questions to sensitive national security matters. Explaining the timing of the revelations, he noted that the situation in Assam since September last year had not been conducive to raising such issues earlier.
On Gogoi’s continuation in office, the CM said the information was newly uncovered. He added that rival candidate Tapan Gogoi plans to file a complaint with the Election Commission, alleging inaccuracies in the MP’s election documents.
The Congress party and Gaurav Gogoi have not yet responded publicly to these allegations. The press conference has sparked intense political debate, with opposition leaders dismissing it as a diversion tactic ahead of elections.
