Two Youths Arrested with Illegal Firearm and Live Ammunition
New Jalpaiguri / Tarai 24 Crime Desk, March 18, 2026 — In a major breakthrough against illegal arms circulation in the region, the New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Police successfully apprehended two individuals and seized an illegal weapon along with live ammunition on March 17.
The raid was conducted following a specialized, covert tip-off received by the local authorities regarding the presence of armed individuals in the area.
The Accused
Acting swiftly on the intelligence, a dedicated team from the NJP Police Station launched a raid in the Paschim Dhantala area and detained two suspects. The arrested individuals have been identified as:
Rajib Laskar (25 years old)
Sanat Barman, alias ‘Deba’ (18 years old)
Both accused are residents of Paschim Dhantala, falling under the jurisdiction of the NJP Police Station in the Jalpaiguri district.
The Seizure & Legal Action
During a thorough physical search of the suspects, police officers recovered one improvised small firearm (commonly known as a desi pistol) and one live cartridge from their possession.
When questioned by the authorities, both Rajib and Sanat failed to produce any valid arms licenses, documents, or satisfactory explanations for carrying the lethal weapon. Consequently, both men were immediately taken into police custody.
Authorities have officially registered a specific case against the duo under the stringent Arms Act at the New Jalpaiguri Police Station.
Police officials have confirmed that further investigation is currently underway to determine the source of the illegal firearm and to find out if the accused were planning a specific crime in the city or are part of a larger arms-smuggling syndicate.
