A New Era or Growing Influence? US Raises Flag at Venezuela Embassy Amid Ongoing Oil Debate

Caracas / Tarai 24 International Desk, March 15, 2026 — In a highly symbolic move underscoring a dramatic shift in geopolitics, the American flag was raised over the United States Embassy in Caracas on Saturday for the first time since diplomatic relations were severed in 2019.

The flag-raising ceremony took place exactly seven years after it was lowered, reflecting the rapidly changing relationship between Washington and Caracas following the capture of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by American troops earlier this year in January.

A Thaw in Diplomatic Relations

The return of the U.S. flag to the embassy compound comes on the heels of several supportive statements from U.S. President Donald Trump directed at Maduro’s successor, acting President Delcy Rodríguez. Rodríguez’s administration has actively attempted to keep negotiation channels open with the American government as the nation navigates its turbulent political transition.

While the flag is once again waving over the compound, the U.S. Embassy team clarified in a social media statement that the building is currently undergoing extensive renovations. An official date for the embassy’s full reopening to the public and resumption of regular consular services has not yet been announced.

Mixed Reactions on the Ground

The sight of the American flag flying in the Venezuelan capital drew immediate, polarized attention from local residents.

For some, it represents a hopeful step toward international normalization and economic recovery. “It’s a good thing, really, what a joy,” Caracas resident Luz Verónica López told reporters on the scene. “Other countries must come back too because that’s what we need; progress, to move forward with good relations with the rest of the world, as it should be.”

Another resident, Alessandro Di Benedetto, echoed the optimism, noting a positive atmosphere among onlookers. “I found several people here surprised and happy because today they raised the U.S. flag at the embassy… This is positive; this is another step,” he noted.

Underlying Political Tensions

Despite the diplomatic initiative, significant segments of Venezuelan society and the political establishment remain deeply critical of the developments. Many citizens and politicians continue to aggressively condemn President Trump’s decision to forcefully remove Maduro from office and imprison him, along with his wife, in New York. Furthermore, there is growing domestic apprehension regarding the rapidly increasing American influence over the South American nation’s massive, state-run oil industry.
