Mumbai, February 9, 2026 – In a stunning turn of events, beloved Bollywood comedian Rajpal Yadav, famous for iconic roles in films like Hera Pheri, Chup Chup Ke, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa, has surrendered to Tihar Jail to serve a six-month sentence in a long-pending cheque bounce case involving a ₹9 crore debt.

The actor turned himself in on February 5, 2026, after the Delhi High Court rejected his final plea for an extension, marking the end of a legal battle that has dragged on for over a decade.

The Case Explained

The controversy dates back to 2010, when Yadav and his wife took a ₹5 crore loan from Delhi-based businessman Jitendra Jain of Murli Projects Pvt. Ltd. to fund his directorial debut, Ata Pata Laapata. When the film failed to repay the loan, seven cheques issued as repayment bounced, leading to multiple cases under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.

In 2018, a metropolitan magistrate court convicted Yadav, sentencing him to six months in prison per case along with hefty fines. Appeals followed, with the Delhi High Court granting temporary stays and extensions—often on undertakings to settle the mounting dues (now escalated to nearly ₹9 crore with interest and penalties).

Despite partial payments (including ₹75 lakh in deposits) and repeated court leniency, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma criticized Yadav’s “deplorable” conduct for breaching nearly 20 undertakings. On February 2, 2026, the court ordered immediate surrender by February 4, rejecting a last-minute “mercy plea” for more time. A final appearance on February 5, offering ₹25 lakh more, also failed to sway the judge, who emphasized no special treatment for celebrities.

Yadav surrendered around 4 PM on February 5, following standard procedures at Tihar Jail, where he is currently lodged.

Industry and Fan Reactions

The news has sent shockwaves through Bollywood, with fans expressing disbelief over the fate of the actor known for his impeccable comic timing. Social media is flooded with memes and tributes, while industry insiders highlight the harsh realities of financial disputes in showbiz.

As of now, there are no reports of further appeals or early release. Yadav, who has faced short jail stints in similar cases in the past (including brief periods in 2013), remains behind bars, serving his sentence.

This development serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of cheque bounce cases under Indian law, even for high-profile figures.
