Siliguri, February 23, 2026 — In a major breakthrough, the Siliguri Police have arrested the prime accused in the horrific Sevoke Road, Panitanki More hit-and-run case that claimed the life of a young man and left a woman critically injured.

The accused has been identified as Debangshu Pal Chowdhury, who is reportedly the son of a petrol pump owner located on Sevoke Road. Police officials have confirmed that he was behind the wheel of the four-wheeler involved in the tragic incident.

The brutal accident occurred on February 19, 2026. According to reports, the speeding vehicle struck two individuals with such force that they were dragged for a considerable distance along the road.

One of the victims, a youth named Shankar Chhetri, tragically succumbed to his injuries. The second victim, a young woman, remains in critical condition and is currently engaged in a life-and-death struggle at a medical facility. The heartless nature of the crime—where the driver fled the scene, leaving the severely injured victims to fend for themselves—had sparked massive outrage across Siliguri.

Following the accident, the police launched a massive manhunt and intensified their investigation after crucial CCTV footage of the incident surfaced. Investigating officers meticulously examined surveillance footage from multiple locations across the city to track the fleeing vehicle’s route.

On Monday, February 23, the damaged vehicle was successfully traced to a car showroom situated on Sevoke Road. Prompt police action led to the apprehension of Debangshu Pal Chowdhury, who was immediately brought in for questioning.

Authorities are currently investigating whether driving under the influence of alcohol was a contributing factor at the time of the collision.

Following the arrest, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Quazi Samsuddin Ahamed visited the Siliguri police station to personally oversee the developments. He officially confirmed that the accused had been taken into police custody in connection with the fatal accident.
