Finding the Next Olympian: Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya Inaugurates 1st Khelo India Tribal Games
Raipur, March 26, 2026 — In a landmark initiative aimed at uncovering hidden athletic talent in remote regions, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, officially inaugurated the first-ever Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) 2026.
The mega sporting event, which commenced on Wednesday, is being hosted across three major cities in Chhattisgarh—Raipur, Bastar, and Sarguja—and will conclude on April 3, 2026.
Chhattisgarh Declared the Permanent Host
During the grand inauguration ceremony, attended by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, Dr. Mandaviya made a major announcement: Chhattisgarh has been designated as the permanent host state for the Khelo India Tribal Games. The event will now be organized annually across the state to systematically identify and nurture tribal sporting talent.
“Sporting talent is not limited to metropolitan cities; it thrives in tribal villages and across diverse regions of the country. The introduction of the Khelo India Tribal Games aims to identify and promote this untapped potential,” Dr. Mandaviya stated.
Scouting the Next Deepika Kumari
Highlighting the immense, historical contribution of tribal communities to India’s sporting legacy—referencing icons like Olympian archer Deepika Kumari—the Sports Minister assured that the government is taking a structured approach to talent scouting.
Professional coaches from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) will be actively present at all KITG venues. Their primary mission is to scout promising athletes who will then be inducted into Khelo India Centres and Centres of Excellence for advanced, world-class training to compete at national and international levels.
Focus on the 2036 Olympics
Beyond the immediate games, the Minister outlined India’s aggressive roadmap for global sporting dominance. He expressed deep confidence that India will deliver its “best-ever performance” at the upcoming Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.
Emphasizing the impact of sweeping initiatives like Fit India and Khelo India over the past decade, Dr. Mandaviya reiterated the country’s ultimate ambition: successfully hosting the Olympic Games in 2036, breaking into the top 10 global sporting ranks by the same year, and becoming a top-five sporting nation by 2047.
To ensure fair play and transparency in achieving these goals, he also referenced the upcoming Khelo Bharat Niti and the Sports Governance Bill, which will guarantee that performance remains the sole criterion for athlete selection.
