New Delhi — In a major move to empower rural local bodies, the Central Government has released over ₹1,100 crore to several states to strengthen the Panchayati Raj system. The funds, sanctioned by the Ministry of Finance, are aimed at improving basic infrastructure and service delivery at the grassroots level, ensuring that rural governance becomes more efficient and self-reliant.

The financial assistance has been provided under the recommendations of the 15th Finance Commission, which emphasizes the decentralization of power and the financial health of local bodies. These grants are categorized into “tied” and “untied” funds; while untied grants allow Panchayats the flexibility to address local felt needs, tied grants are specifically designated for essential services such as sanitation, maintenance of Open Defecation Free (ODF) status, and the supply of clean drinking water and rainwater harvesting.

By infused this capital into the rural administrative framework, the government aims to bridge the developmental gap between urban and rural areas. State governments are expected to ensure the timely transfer of these funds to the respective Gram Panchayats, Block Panchayats, and District Panchayats. This move is seen as a critical step in supporting the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” vision by fostering localized development and improving the overall quality of life for rural citizens.

Officials noted that the disbursement of these grants is linked to the performance and transparency of the local bodies, encouraging Panchayats to maintain audited accounts and functional digital reporting systems. With this latest release of funds, rural administrative bodies across the recipient states will have the necessary resources to execute pending projects and initiate new welfare schemes tailored to their specific regional requirements.
