Ambassador of India to Bhutan Sandeep Arya and Bhutan Minister Lyonpo Chandra Bahadur Gurung Open Khuru Kuenphen Bridge

Thimphu, March 27, 2026 — In a major milestone for regional infrastructure and bilateral cooperation, the newly constructed Khuru Kuenphen Bridge in Punakha was officially opened to the public today.

The landmark infrastructure project, built as an India-Bhutan Friendship Project, was jointly inaugurated by His Excellency Lyonpo Chandra Bahadur Gurung, Bhutan’s Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, and Shri Sandeep Arya, the Ambassador of India to Bhutan. The Government of India fully supported the project with a funding allocation of INR/Nu. 250 million.

A Massive Engineering Upgrade

The new Khuru Kuenphen Bridge represents a significant leap forward in local infrastructure. It replaces an aging Bailey bridge that was originally constructed in 2003.

Utilizing advanced and high-tech engineering methods, the new structure provides several critical upgrades over its predecessor:

  • Enhanced Durability: Built as a permanent, long-life structure designed to withstand harsh weather and heavy use.

  • Higher Load Capacity: Capable of safely supporting heavier commercial and transit vehicles.

  • Pedestrian Safety: Features a dedicated, well-designed pedestrian walkway, ensuring safe passage for locals crossing on foot.

Economic Impact and Regional Connectivity

The bridge is expected to be an economic catalyst for the region. It establishes a direct, modernized link between the crucial urban centers of Khuruthang in Punakha and Bajo in Wangdue Phodrang.

By drastically improving travel conditions, the bridge will directly benefit daily commuters, local businesses, and the growing influx of tourists visiting the picturesque valleys. Officials note that the positive impacts will also ripple out to nearby Dzongkhags (districts), including Gasa, facilitating smoother trade and easier living for thousands of residents.

A Symbol of Deepening Ties

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Ambassador Sandeep Arya expressed his immense pleasure at the completion of the project. He highlighted that the new-age bridge, with its enhanced capacities, will directly contribute to the region’s modernization and economic development.

The Ambassador described the Khuru Kuenphen Bridge not just as a feat of engineering, but as a permanent, physical testament to the deep, enduring friendship between the governments and the people of India and Bhutan.
