“Please Open the Lock”: The Heartbreaking Final Days of the 19-Year-Old Delhi’s ‘Honour’ Killing Victim
New Delhi, April 4, 2026 — In a chilling case of a suspected ‘honour’ killing, the Delhi Police have arrested a father and son duo from Hari Nagar for the brutal murder of their 19-year-old daughter. The accused allegedly smothered the young woman to death over her relationship with a relative and then fabricated an elaborate story about a prolonged illness to cover up the crime.
The harrowing incident came to light on Wednesday afternoon when police successfully intercepted the family just as they were taking the victim’s remains to a graveyard for burial.
Smothered Over an Objectionable Relationship
According to a senior police officer, the preliminary probe indicates that the young woman was murdered on Tuesday night.
“The woman was in a relationship with a relative and the family was against it,” the officer stated. “They had been opposing it for some time, but the woman recently told them she would elope with him. This appears to have been the primary trigger behind the killing on Tuesday night.”
Following the murder, the parents and brother allegedly stayed with the dead body throughout the night. The next morning, they informed unsuspecting neighbours that the 19-year-old had suddenly passed away due to severe, long-term health issues, citing cancer, jaundice, and kidney failure.
The Boyfriend’s Crucial Call
The family almost succeeded in burying the evidence. Neighbours gathered to console the grieving mother and assisted the family in conducting the last rites.
However, the cover-up fell apart when one of the victim’s cousins—who lived nearby and suspected foul play—called the victim’s boyfriend in Bihar to inform him of the sudden death. The frantic boyfriend immediately contacted his own cousin residing in Delhi, who then alerted the local authorities around 2:00 PM on Wednesday.
Acting swiftly, a police team arrived at the graveyard just in time, halting the burial and seizing custody of the body. On Thursday, the post-mortem report from Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital confirmed everyone’s worst fears: the cause of death was officially ruled as “smothering.”
Following the autopsy results, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Sharad Bhaskar confirmed that a formal murder case was registered at the Hari Nagar police station, leading to the arrest of the father and brother on Friday.
“She Asked Me to Open the Lock”
The tragedy has left the local neighborhood in deep shock, particularly as horrifying details of the victim’s final days emerge. Neighbours alleged that the 19-year-old had been held captive inside her own home leading up to her death.
“She was beaten by her family,” claimed a 65-year-old neighbour. “Whenever I passed by, she would ask me to somehow open the lock. Her family had put a large lock on the door and would leave for work every day. There was no way for me to open it.”
The same neighbour noted that they were completely shocked by the mother’s excuse of cancer and kidney failure on Wednesday morning, as the young woman had never appeared physically ill to anyone in the community. Further investigations into the case are currently underway.
