Raichur (Karnataka), April 19, 2026 — A festive village gathering turned into a nightmare late Friday night in Karnataka’s Raichur district when a heavy cement arch of a community hall suddenly collapsed, killing two young children and leaving five others severely injured.

The tragic incident took place at Bail Merched village in the Manvi taluk while locals were gathered to watch a traditional open-air drama.

Disaster Strikes During Village Play

According to authorities, the incident occurred around 11:30 PM on Friday. Villagers, including several women and children, were sitting on the ground watching an open-air ‘Devi Drama’ (bayalata) organized in the village.

Police stated that a large cement nameboard and arch installed at the Samudaya Bhavan (community hall) collapsed unexpectedly, crashing down directly onto the spectators sitting beneath it. Initial reports indicate that the structure was compromised due to strong winds, lightning, and a severe thunderstorm sweeping through the area.

Two Young Lives Lost

The sudden structural failure resulted in the immediate deaths of two young children. Police have identified the deceased victims as:

  • Vishwanath Ramalinga Naik (9): A resident of Kurdi village in Manvi taluk.

  • Sanvita Peddayya Naik (2): A toddler from Wadavatti village in Sirwar taluk.

In addition to the fatalities, five others—all female spectators—sustained severe injuries in the collapse. The injured individuals have been identified as Vishalakshi (25, Sanvita’s mother), Yallamma (3), Shailaja, Basamma (45), and Laxmi (18).

Vishalakshi reportedly suffered major injuries to her head and left hand. All injured individuals were rushed to the OPEC Hospital and Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences for emergency medical care. Hospital sources later indicated that the victims are currently receiving treatment and are out of danger.

Police Launch Investigation

Following the horrific accident, the Manvi police arrived at the scene to secure the area and assess the damage. Both bodies were shifted to the Manvi government hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

An Unnatural Death Report (UDR) has been officially registered by the Manvi police based on a complaint lodged by Ramalinga Venkatesh Naik, the grieving father of young Vishwanath. While the police FIR attributes the immediate cause of the collapse to extreme weather conditions, some local villagers have alleged that the poor construction quality of the community hall’s arch played a significant role in the avoidable disaster. An investigation into the structural integrity of the building is ongoing.
