Mamata Banerjee Refuses to Drop ‘Chief Minister’ Tag After Assembly Dissolution

Kolkata, May 8, 2026 – The West Bengal Legislative Assembly was officially dissolved on May 7, 2026, following the BJP’s decisive victory in the recently concluded state assembly elections.

The Governor of West Bengal, R.N. Ravi, issued a notification dissolving the assembly under Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution, with effect from May 7. This move came after the five-year term of the current assembly ended and amid a political standoff, as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee refused to resign despite her party’s heavy defeat.

Even after the dissolution, Mamata Banerjee has continued to refer to herself as Chief Minister on her social media handles, maintaining her public profile as the head of the state government.

The BJP secured a strong majority in the 294-member assembly, ending the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule in the state. Mamata Banerjee had earlier described the election results as “looted” and alleged large-scale irregularities during the counting process. She indicated that her party would challenge the outcome legally.

With the assembly now dissolved, the focus shifts to the formation of the new government. The swearing-in of the new Chief Minister and cabinet is expected in the coming days.

This marks a historic political transition in West Bengal after one and a half decades of TMC rule.
