Gurugram / Kalimpong – Sushmita Lepcha, a talented defender from Kalimpong in North Bengal and a key player for East Bengal FC, has been selected for the Indian senior women’s national football team camp currently underway in Gurugram.
The 29-year-old midfielder-turned-defender, who played a pivotal role in East Bengal’s recent successes including the SAFF Club Women’s Championship 2025, joins a 29-member squad assembled by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) for intensive preparations ahead of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026.
The Blue Tigresses began their training camp on January 12, focusing on building team cohesion and tactics. The team is scheduled to travel to Türkiye on January 15 for three closed-door friendly matches against European clubs from January 18 to 24, as part of their buildup for the continental tournament.
Lepcha’s inclusion marks a proud moment for the Darjeeling hills and North Bengal, highlighting the region’s growing contribution to Indian women’s football. Her journey from local grounds to the national setup inspires aspiring players in the area.
