New Two-Stage Format
In a significant structural shift proposed by the clubs, the IFL 2025-26 season will be played in a two-stage format:
Stage 1 (League Phase): All 10 clubs will compete in a round-robin format.
Stage 2 (Split Phase): Based on the standings from Stage 1, the teams will be divided into two groups:
Championship Round: The top 5 teams will face each other in a home-and-away format to decide the league champion.
Relegation Round: The bottom 5 teams will compete in a centralized single-leg format to fight for survival.
Crucially, points earned in Stage 1 will carry forward to Stage 2, ensuring that every match in the initial phase remains vital for the final standings. The team finishing at the top of the Championship Round will be crowned the Indian Football League Champion and earn promotion to the top-tier ISL.
This season marks a new era for India’s second division, with the “Indian Football League” rebranding aimed at aligning the competition with international standards and enhancing its commercial appeal.
