DARJEELING, West Bengal — The iconic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), popularly known as the “Toy Train,” has achieved a historic financial milestone by generating a record-breaking revenue of ₹24.6 crore during the 2025 calendar year. This significant surge in earnings marks a major boost for the UNESCO World Heritage site, reflecting the growing global appeal of the Himalayan rail journey.
The North Frontier Railway (NFR) attributed this success to a sharp rise in tourist footfall, both domestic and international, throughout the year. The record revenue represents a substantial jump compared to previous years, driven by the introduction of more “Joy Rides” between Darjeeling and Ghum, as well as special steam-engine-hauled services that remain a major attraction for heritage enthusiasts.
Authorities noted that the railway’s efforts to enhance the passenger experience and maintain the heritage value of the narrow-gauge line have paid off. In addition to regular commutes, the DHR has been actively promoting evening “Jungle Tea Toy Train” safaris and other curated experiences, which contributed heavily to the record-breaking figures. The increased demand during the peak summer and autumn seasons further bolstered the collection.
The achievement is seen as a vital economic indicator for the Darjeeling hills, where tourism serves as a primary livelihood. Railway officials expressed optimism that with continued infrastructure maintenance and the modernization of passenger amenities while preserving the line’s historic charm, the DHR will continue to reach new heights in the coming years.
