7 Killed, 10 Feared Trapped After Massive Soil Collapse at Gurugram Construction Site
Gurugram, March 10, 2026 — At least seven laborers lost their lives and four others sustained injuries after a massive mound of soil collapsed at a construction site near the Gurugram-Rewari border. With approximately 10 workers still feared trapped under the debris, a large-scale, multi-agency rescue operation is currently underway.
The tragic incident occurred between 7:30 PM and 8:00 PM on Monday evening. Preliminary investigations indicate that a retaining wall unexpectedly gave way, leading to a massive soil cave-in at the basement level where a sewage treatment plant was being constructed for a new residential project.
Delayed Alert and Immediate Response
Authorities noted a critical delay in the reporting of the collapse. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Manesar), Deepak Kumar Jewaria, stated that the police were only alerted after 9:15 PM when a nearby hospital reported receiving several casualties.
“Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the spot,” Jewaria confirmed. Five workers were declared dead on arrival at the hospital, while additional fatalities were later confirmed directly at the construction site.
Desperate Search for Survivors
Workers who survived the collapse, along with site contractors, informed investigators that several laborers had been working deep in the basement area when the earth suddenly caved in. They fear that at least 10 more individuals remain buried under the heavy rubble.
Following the alert, teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the fire department, and civil defense launched an overnight rescue mission that continued into Tuesday morning. Heavy machinery, including excavators, and high-mast lighting have been deployed to rapidly clear the debris and locate any remaining survivors.
Investigation Initiated
Senior police and district administration officials have reached the site to closely monitor the ongoing rescue efforts. Authorities are currently working to formally identify the deceased workers. Officials added that a First Information Report (FIR) is expected to be registered once complaints are filed by the victims’ families or the injured survivors.
