Udhampur (Jammu and Kashmir), April 20, 2026 — A devastating road accident occurred in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district on Monday morning, resulting in the deaths of at least seven passengers and leaving several others severely injured.
The tragedy unfolded when a public transport bus, traveling from Ramnagar to Udhampur, lost control and rolled down into a deep, steep gorge near Kanote village.

Local emergency response teams, police units, and district administration officials rushed to the accident site immediately to initiate rescue efforts in the difficult terrain. Given the depth of the gorge and the impact of the crash, authorities fear the casualty count could rise as rescue operations continue.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh, who represents the Udhampur constituency, took to social media to share immediate updates after speaking directly with the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Udhampur, Minga Sherpa.
“Just now spoke to DC Udhampur… after learning about a tragic road accident, less than an hour ago, at village Kanote, involving a public transport bus on way from Ramnagar to Udhampur,” the Union Minister posted on X.

Stating that the rescue operation was launched immediately, he added a grim note: “Heavy casualties are expected. All possible assistance is being provided. The injured will be shifted for medical aid. Arrangements are being made to airlift the seriously injured.”
At this time, seven fatalities have been officially confirmed. The exact cause of the accident—whether it was a mechanical failure, driver error, or treacherous road conditions—is yet to be determined by the investigating authorities.
