21 Houses Plunge 20 Feet as Hollowed Ground Caves In
Dhanbad (Jharkhand), April 24, 2026 — Panic and chaos gripped the coal-rich belt of Dhanbad late Thursday night when the ground suddenly caved in, causing over 21 houses to plunge into a deep trench. The massive land subsidence occurred in the Tandabari settlement, falling under the Sonardih Outpost (OP) area.
At least five people sustained injuries as their homes collapsed roughly 15 to 20 feet below the normal ground level. One individual remains in critical condition and is currently undergoing treatment at Asarfi Hospital in Dhanbad.
A Deafening Roar and a Desperate Escape
According to eyewitnesses, the terrifying incident took place around 9:00 PM. A deafening sound echoed through the settlement, followed instantly by the ground violently giving way.
“We somehow saved our lives by evacuating our homes immediately when we heard the noise,” recounted Rekha Devi, a terrified resident. “Otherwise, we would have been killed, buried right inside.”
Upon receiving emergency alerts, district administration officials and representatives from Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) rushed to the scene. Emergency camps have been set up to accommodate the newly homeless families. Circle Officer (CO) Girjanand Kisku confirmed that the area has been declared “extremely dangerous,” and the administration has already initiated the emergency relocation of 27 families to available flats in the Belgaria area.
Simmering Anger Against BCCL
The disaster has sparked massive outrage among the villagers, who squarely blame the BCCL management’s unchecked underground coal mining operations for rendering the earth entirely hollow beneath their settlement.
Enraged by the destruction of their homes, hundreds of villagers took to the streets and blocked the Chas-Rajganj four-lane highway, bringing regional traffic to a complete standstill.
Residents claim this is not an isolated disaster but a recurring nightmare that authorities have continuously ignored. Local resident Prabhull Kumar Sahni revealed that the community has been living in constant fear following two recent incidents of subsidence in the exact same area.
“Three people lost their lives in the first instance of land subsidence on March 31,” Sahni stated. “At that time, we were promised that everyone would be relocated, but absolutely no action was taken. A second incident happened just days ago on April 22, and still, neither BCCL nor the administration took any concrete measures.”
With the ground literally slipping out from under them, the traumatized residents of Tandabari are now demanding a permanent, secure rehabilitation plan before further lives are lost to the hollowed-out mines of Dhanbad.
