Indian Nationals in Iran Told to Shelter in Place for 48 Hours as US-Iran Tensions Hit Boiling Point

New Delhi, April 8, 2026 — As the geopolitical crisis in the West Asia reaches a terrifying boiling point, the Embassy of India in Tehran has issued a critical, urgent advisory instructing all Indian nationals remaining in Iran to strictly shelter in place for the next 48 hours.

The emergency directive, dated April 7, comes directly on the heels of a stark and unprecedented ultimatum issued by United States President Donald Trump, raising severe concerns of an imminent, large-scale military escalation in the region.

The 48-Hour Lockdown Directives

The highly specific advisory outlines stringent safety measures for Indian citizens caught in the crossfire. The Embassy has mandated that nationals “must stay where they are for the next 48 hours,” effectively instituting a lockdown for its citizens.

Key instructions from the official notice include:

  • Avoid High-Risk Targets: Citizens are strictly warned to stay away from all electric facilities and military installations.

  • Avoid Upper Floors: In a grim indicator of potential aerial strikes, nationals have been advised to avoid the upper floors of multi-storey buildings and remain indoors.

  • Restrict Highway Movement: Any essential movement on highways must be coordinated strictly and directly with Embassy officials.

  • Embassy Accommodations: Indians currently housed in Embassy-hired hotels have been ordered to stay put indoors and maintain regular communication with on-site embassy teams.

The Trigger: A Chilling Ultimatum

The Embassy’s drastic measures reflect the rapidly deteriorating security environment following heightened military exchanges and a chilling warning from the White House regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

On Tuesday, President Trump took to Truth Social to issue what is being called one of the most aggressive threats in the history of US-Iran relations. “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,” Trump warned in his post. “I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.”

With Iran refusing to yield to the pressure, citing “empty promises,” the threat of retaliatory strikes on critical infrastructure—including power grids and military bases—has skyrocketed, prompting the Indian Embassy to specifically warn against proximity to electrical and military sites.

Emergency Helplines Remain Active

As the 48-hour window progresses, the Indian government continues to monitor the situation closely, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reportedly in continuous contact with regional stakeholders to ensure the safety of Indian citizens and seafarers.

The Embassy has urged all nationals to closely monitor official updates and rely only on verified channels. The following 24/7 emergency helplines remain fully operational for any Indian citizen requiring immediate assistance:

  • +989128109115

  • +989128109109

  • +989128109102

  • +989932179359
