Election Commission Team in Chennai to Review Tamil Nadu Assembly Poll Preparations
Chennai, February 26, 2026 — Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi, are in Chennai for a two-day visit beginning today. The purpose of the visit is to review the administrative and security preparations for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Review Meetings Scheduled
During the two-day review period, the Election Commission team is scheduled to hold formal meetings with key stakeholders. This includes discussions with District Collectors, senior police officials, and recognized representatives from various political parties to assess the state’s readiness for the polling process.
Electoral Context and Voter Statistics
The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly consists of 234 constituencies. The incumbent state government will complete its standard five-year tenure this year, following the last assembly elections conducted in 2021.
Recent electoral data indicates a shift in the total number of registered voters. Following the release of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) a few days ago, the total electorate in Tamil Nadu currently stands at 5.67 crore. This figure represents a decrease compared to recent election cycles; the state recorded a total electorate of 6.27 crore during the 2024 Parliamentary elections, and 6.62 crore during the 2021 Assembly elections.
The Election Commission is expected to utilize the feedback from these meetings to finalize the polling schedule and administrative guidelines for the state.
