₹9 Lakh Jewellery Heist Cracked in 6 Days: Sikkim Police Arrest 2, Recover 100% Stolen Loot

Thieves Break Into Tathangchen Home, Arrested in Deorali with ₹9 Lakh Stolen Jewellery

Gangtok (Sikkim), April 19, 2026 — In a major breakthrough, the Gangtok Sadar Police have successfully solved a high-value burglary case, arresting two young suspects and recovering stolen jewellery worth approximately ₹9 lakhs in its entirety.

The prompt action and effective use of technological surveillance by the police team led to the quick interception of the fleeing suspects in the Deorali area.

The Tathangchen House Break-In

The incident originally came to light last week when a formal complaint was lodged regarding a major break-in at a residential property in Tathangchen. According to the complaint, unknown miscreants had breached the house and made away with a massive haul of gold and other valuable jewellery.

Following the complaint, the Sadar Police Station registered FIR No. 35/2026 on April 13, 2026. Given the severity of the crime, the case was immediately registered under the strict provisions of Sections 305(a) and 331(3) of the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

CCTV Analysis and the Deorali Interception

The investigation was spearheaded by Investigating Officer (IO) Sub-Inspector Taman Gurung. The police team immediately launched a massive manhunt, relying heavily on extensive CCTV footage analysis from the Tathangchen area and active local informant deployment.

The technical intelligence quickly paid off, leading the police to identify two primary suspects. Acting on a specific tip-off regarding the suspects’ movements, a dedicated police team led by Police Inspector (PI) Manish Gurung laid a trap and successfully intercepted the duo at Deorali.

The Accused and the Recovery

The arrested individuals have been identified as:

  • Passang Tshering Bhutia (21)

  • Buddha Rai (23)

According to police records, both youths originally hail from Tikjuk in the Gyalshing district but were presently residing in the Tathangchen area, giving them intimate knowledge of the locality they targeted.

Upon apprehending the suspects, the police conducted a thorough search and achieved a massive success—a 100% recovery of the stolen articles. The entire cache of stolen jewellery, valued at ₹9 lakhs, was found safely in their possession.

Both accused have been formally placed under arrest, and further legal proceedings under the BNS are currently underway to present them before the magistrate.
