Gyalshing on High Alert: District Administration Cracks Down on Forest Fires and Bird Flu (H5N1) Threat
Gyalshing, February 23, 2026 — In response to growing environmental and public health concerns, the Gyalshing District Administration convened a high-level coordination meeting today to aggressively tackle the recent surge in forest fires and ensure strict preparedness against the spread of Avian Influenza (H5N1).
The crucial dual-session meeting, held at the District Administrative Centre, was chaired by District Collector (DC) Mr. Tenzing D. Denzongpa. It saw the participation of top district officials, including Superintendent of Police Mr. Tshering Sherpa, DFO(T) Mr. Jigmee Tsewang Sharngoe, and CMO Dr. Namgay Bhutia.
Tackling the Surge in Forest Fires
Following strict directives from the Chief Secretary of Sikkim, the administration prioritized immediate mitigation strategies for the unprecedented rise in forest fire incidents across the district.
During the session, DC Denzongpa directed the reactivation of the district’s Joint Forest Fire Management Committee. To ensure a rapid and localized response, Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) and Block Development Officers (BDOs) were instructed to form designated fire management committees within their respective jurisdictions.
Additionally, the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) was advised to immediately install water tanks at strategic, high-risk points across Gyalshing and station dedicated field staff to ensure their maintenance.
Preventing an H5N1 Outbreak
The second half of the meeting was dedicated to the looming threat of Avian Influenza (H5N1), a highly pathogenic and notifiable disease that poses severe risks to poultry, wildlife, and public health.
Emphasizing the need for a highly inclusive and coordinated approach, the DC called upon all stakeholding departments—including Animal Husbandry, Health, and paramilitary forces—to actively collaborate in keeping the district safe from a potential outbreak. The administration stressed that proactive planning and execution of preparatory measures are non-negotiable.
New District Level Committee Formed
To streamline these vital efforts, a dedicated “District Level Committee” was unanimously constituted by the end of the meeting. This new body is officially entrusted with the ongoing responsibility of monitoring, preventing, and preparing against both forest fires and any potential Avian Influenza outbreak in Gyalshing.
The comprehensive meeting was heavily attended by key stakeholders, including SDMs from Gyalshing (HQ) and Dentam, Commandants from the 36th and 72nd Battalions of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), local BDOs, veterinary officers, and disaster management personnel, signaling a unified front against these dual threats.
