Rallies, Haats, and Highway Repairs: Complete Evening Traffic Advisory for Siliguri and Bagdogra

Siliguri, April 20, 2026 — Commuters heading home this evening should brace for severe traffic snarls across Siliguri and its outskirts. The Siliguri Traffic Police has updated its Monday bulletin, warning citizens of massive congestion driven by two major public rallies, four bustling evening markets, and ongoing highway repairs.

Travelers rushing to catch flights at Bagdogra Airport or trains at NJP Railway Station are strongly advised to leave early and strictly follow the mandated route diversions.

Two Major Evening Rallies to Disrupt Traffic Flow

Adding to the typical Monday evening rush, police have issued alerts for two large rallies that will significantly impact vehicular movement across key junctions:

  • The Khaprail Corridor: A rally is scheduled to commence at 4:00 PM, moving from Patharghata to Khaprail. Commuters should anticipate heavy traffic congestion specifically at Khaprail More during this event.

  • City Center Disruption: A massive rally will proceed through the heart of the city starting from 5:00 PM onwards. Originating at Baghajatin Park, the procession will move towards Gostapaul More, passing through major choke points including Hospital More, Venus More, Sevoke More, and Bidhan Road. Traffic along this entire route is expected to remain incredibly slow.

Local Markets (Haats) Adding to the Chaos

Four major local markets are fully operational today, bringing heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic to their respective zones. Drivers should expect localized delays at:

  • Hanskhawa Haat (Bagdogra): Expect heavy congestion on the Bagdogra stretch from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

  • Salugara Haat (Salugara): Traffic will remain affected until 9:00 PM.

  • Fulbari Haat & Ambari Haat: Both markets will cause traffic delays in their respective areas until 8:00 PM.

Avoid These Active Construction Zones

  • Darjeeling More: Ongoing development work continues to make this junction a major bottleneck. Use alternate routes wherever possible.

  • NH-10 Corridors: Repair activities are actively underway between Siliguri Gate and Champasari More, as well as a designated work zone in Salugara.

  • Sahudangi–Ambari Link Bridge (Canal More): The bridge remains completely closed for the construction of a new one. Vehicles traveling between Belacoba/Siliguri and Ambari/Sahudangi must detour via Nawapara More.

Crucial Diversions for Airport, NJP, and Hill Travelers

To navigate around the rallies and construction zones, the Siliguri Traffic Police has issued strict route guidelines for light vehicles and passenger cars:

  • To the Hills (Darjeeling, Kurseong, Mirik): Vehicles coming from Bagdogra Airport or NJP Station must utilize the Noukaghat route via Kawakhali and Khaprail Road.

  • To Bagdogra Airport: Vehicles coming from Jalpaiguri or descending from Darjeeling are advised to completely avoid the Darjeeling More junction. Use Khaprail Road instead.

  • To NJP Station: Avoid Sevoke Road entirely. Commuters should use the Phansidewa Underpass via Kawakhali and Noukaghat.

  • From Sikkim & Kalimpong: Vehicles heading down toward NJP Station or Bagdogra Airport must use the Eastern Bypass via the Bhaktinagar Check Post.

Goods Vehicles Strictly Restricted

The movement of heavy goods vehicles towards the town remains strictly restricted for the evening:

  • Trucks arriving from the Bagdogra or Paribahan Nagar side are barred from using Darjeeling More and must take the Phansidewa Underpass.

  • Goods vehicles descending from Sikkim and Kalimpong must avoid Champasari and Darjeeling More, routing instead through the Eastern Bypass.

The Siliguri Traffic Police urges all drivers to cooperate with traffic personnel on the ground, avoid the rally routes if possible, and maintain a safe following distance in all construction zones.
