Avoid Khaprail and Hill Cart Road Today: Mega Political Events to Disrupt Siliguri Traffic

Siliguri, April 21, 2026 — Commuters in Siliguri are advised to plan their travel carefully today, as vehicular movement on principal roads is expected to be highly sluggish. The Siliguri Traffic Police has issued a comprehensive Tuesday bulletin warning of major disruptions caused by back-to-back political programs, the weekly Matigara Haat, and ongoing infrastructure projects.

Citizens heading to Bagdogra Airport or NJP Railway Station must strictly adhere to the designated detours to avoid missing their flights or trains.

Political Programs to Block Key Arteries

The biggest traffic hurdles today will stem from major political gatherings scheduled in two shifts:

  • Morning Blockade (8:00 AM to 12:00 PM): Entry will be strictly restricted on Khaprail Road and the stretch from New Chamta to Sukna due to a morning political program.

  • Afternoon Rush (12:00 PM onwards): As the day progresses, the political activities will shift toward the heart of the city. Commuters should brace for extremely busy conditions and sluggish traffic along Hill Cart Road, Bidhan Road, and Kachari Road from noon onward.

Matigara Haat and Construction Bottlenecks

Adding to the city’s traffic load is the weekly Matigara Haat, which will severely affect vehicular movement in the Matigara area for most of the day, specifically from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Furthermore, commuters are advised to drive cautiously and maintain safe distances across the following active construction zones:

  • Darjeeling More Crossing: Ongoing development work continues to make this junction a massive congestion point. Avoid it if possible.

  • NH-10 Corridors: Repair activities are actively underway between Siliguri Gate and Champasari More, and in the Salugara work zone.

  • Sahudangi–Ambari Link Bridge (Canal More): This bridge remains closed for the construction of a new one. Vehicles traveling between Belacoba/Siliguri and Ambari/Sahudangi must detour via Nawapara More.

Crucial Diversions for Airport, NJP, and Hill Travelers

To prevent massive gridlocks, authorities have issued strict route guidelines for light vehicles and passenger cars:

  • To the Hills (Darjeeling, Kurseong, Mirik): Vehicles coming from Bagdogra Airport or NJP Station must use the Noukaghat route via Kawakhali and Khaprail Road.

  • To Bagdogra Airport: Vehicles coming from Jalpaiguri or descending from Darjeeling are advised to completely avoid the Darjeeling More junction. Use Khaprail Road instead.

  • To NJP Station: Avoid Sevoke Road entirely. Commuters should use the Phansidewa Underpass via Kawakhali and Noukaghat.

  • From Sikkim & Kalimpong: Vehicles heading down toward NJP Station or Bagdogra Airport must use the Eastern Bypass via the Bhaktinagar Check Post.

Restrictions on Goods Vehicles

To keep the city’s inner roads moving, the movement of heavy goods vehicles into the town remains strictly restricted:

  • Trucks arriving from the Bagdogra or Paribahan Nagar side must not use Darjeeling More and should take the Phansidewa Underpass.

  • Goods vehicles descending from Sikkim and Kalimpong are advised to bypass Champasari and Darjeeling More entirely by routing through the Eastern Bypass.

The Siliguri Traffic Police has requested all drivers to remain alert, comply with traffic regulations, and cooperate with on-duty personnel to navigate today’s challenging commute.
