Real Madrid Injury Crisis Deepens as Rodrygo Tears ACL and Meniscus; Out for up to 10 Months

Madrid, March 4, 2026 — Real Madrid and the Brazilian national team have been dealt a massive blow following confirmation that forward Rodrygo Silva de Goes, better known as Rodrygo, has suffered a severe knee injury. The 25-year-old has been diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and a ruptured lateral meniscus, officially ruling him out for the remainder of the 2025-26 club season and the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Incident at the Bernabéu

The injury occurred during Real Madrid’s frustrating 1-0 La Liga defeat to Getafe on Monday night. Rodrygo, who was just returning to the squad after a month-long layoff due to tendinitis, was brought on as a substitute by manager Álvaro Arbeloa in the 55th minute.

According to match reports, the Brazilian forward’s knee buckled awkwardly during a challenge on the wing around the 66th minute. In a remarkable display of endurance, Rodrygo managed to get back up and play out the final 30 minutes of the match despite the severe structural damage to his knee.

Following tests at the Valdebebas training complex on Tuesday, Real Madrid’s medical services released a formal statement: “Following tests carried out today on our player Rodrygo… he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and a rupture of the lateral meniscus of his right leg.”

World Cup Heartbreak

The injury requires imminent surgery, with recovery timelines for a combined ACL and meniscus tear typically spanning between seven to ten months. This extended rehabilitation window tragically eliminates Rodrygo’s chances of representing Brazil at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which kicks off on June 11 in North America.

Taking to social media to address the devastating setback, an emotional Rodrygo stated: “A huge obstacle has arisen in my life, in my career… I’m out for the rest of the season with my club and out of the World Cup with my country, a dream which everyone knows how much it means to me. One of the worst days of my life… Maybe life has been a little cruel to me lately.”

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) quickly issued a statement expressing solidarity with the athlete and wishing him a speedy recovery.

Real Madrid’s Mounting Injury Crisis

Rodrygo’s long-term absence exacerbates a growing tactical crisis for Real Madrid manager Álvaro Arbeloa. Los Blancos, currently trailing Barcelona by four points in the La Liga title race, are navigating a severely depleted squad.

The attacking frontline is exceptionally thin, with star forward Kylian Mbappé recently traveling to Paris for treatment on an ongoing knee issue. Furthermore, the core spine of the team is compromised, as Jude Bellingham, Éder Militão, and Eduardo Camavinga are all currently managing respective injuries.

Rodrygo will also miss Real Madrid’s crucial upcoming Champions League Round of 16 tie against Manchester City.
