Hingalganj (West Bengal), April 16, 2026 — A tragic incident claimed the life of a Border Security Force (BSF) officer on Thursday after a massive fire broke out at a paramilitary fuel depot in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district.

The fatal fire, which was preceded by a sudden explosion, occurred at the Bankra border outpost (BOP) in Hingalganj, strategically located along the India-Bangladesh border.

Trapped in the Blaze

According to official reports, the unexpected blast triggered an intense fire that rapidly engulfed the outpost’s fuel dump. Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Jagi Ram, a veteran officer who had been serving in the border force since 1990, tragically became trapped inside the facility.

Despite emergency response efforts, ASI Ram succumbed to the fierce blaze before he could be rescued. Authorities confirmed that the fire was eventually contained and there were no other casualties or injuries sustained by the remaining personnel stationed at the outpost.

A Strategic Riverine Outpost

The Bankra border outpost is operated by the 77th Battalion of the BSF. The fuel depot where the explosion occurred served as a critical logistical asset for the paramilitary force’s regional operations.

Officials noted that the depot was primarily utilized to store and supply fuel for specialized BSF patrol boats. These vessels are deployed round-the-clock to monitor and secure the complex riverine borders and dense waterways of the Sundarbans region to prevent smuggling and infiltration.

Joint Inquiry Launched

In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, both the local police and the BSF’s internal investigative authorities launched a comprehensive inquiry into the matter.

The joint investigation aims to determine the exact cause of the initial blast and evaluate the safety protocols governing the storage of highly combustible materials at forward operating bases. The BSF is expected to release further details once the forensic and technical assessments of the destroyed fuel dump are completed.
