New Delhi, February 13, 2026 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his “warm congratulations” to his Barbadian counterpart, Mia Amor Mottley, following her historic third consecutive electoral victory. The outreach highlights the strengthening of bilateral ties between India and the Caribbean nation under Mottley’s leadership.

In a message shared on Friday, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that India deeply values its long-standing friendship with Barbados, which has continued to expand across diverse areas of cooperation.

“I warmly recall our meeting on the sidelines of the India-CARICOM Summit in 2024 and look forward to working closely with her to further strengthen our partnership for the benefit of our peoples,” the Prime Minister stated. The leaders last met in November 2024 in Georgetown, Guyana, where they reviewed cooperation in key sectors including health, pharmaceuticals, climate action, and culture.

Prime Minister Mia Mottley’s Barbados Labour Party (BLP) achieved an unprecedented third consecutive clean sweep, winning all 30 seats in the House of Assembly.

  • The Mandate: The 60-year-old leader defeated opposition leader Ralph Thorne, securing a 30–0 mandate for the third successive general election.

  • National Celebration: Following the landslide win, Mottley declared Friday a national bank holiday and announced a “national thanksgiving” rally to be held at the National Botanical Gardens on Saturday.

  • Core Promises: In her victory speech, Mottley vowed to focus on eliminating poverty, addressing the cost of living, and maintaining Barbados’ strong profile on the international stage.

The relationship between the two nations is reinforced by their shared Commonwealth membership and active engagement in multilateral forums like the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement. Barbados has notably expressed support for India’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

Mottley, widely recognized for her global advocacy on climate disaster financing, led Barbados to become a republic in November 2021 by cutting ties with the British monarchy. Her new Cabinet is expected to be sworn in on Monday, February 16, 2026.
