Disaster Averted in Mangan: Swift Action by Locals and Officials Controls Major Mangshila Fire

Mangan, February 20, 2026 — Following a major fire that broke out in the Lower Jhushing area on Thursday, the Mangan District Administration, alongside the Army and local representatives, maintained a strict overnight vigil to prevent any resurgence of the flames and ensure public safety.

The fire initially erupted on February 19 in Lower Jhushing, falling under the Mangshila–Tibuk Gram Panchayat Unit (GPU). The situation threatened to escalate, but a swift and coordinated response by the District Administration brought the blaze under control.

The successful containment was the result of sustained joint efforts by the Fire & Emergency Services, Sikkim Police, the Forest Department, and dedicated local volunteers, which averted further damage and secured the safety of local residents.

To ensure the fire was fully extinguished and to monitor for any flare-ups in the vulnerable terrains of Mangshila, Jhusing, and Namok, an overnight vigil was led by Mangan District Collector (DC) Mr. Anant Jain.

The administration deployed drone cameras throughout the night to gain a real-time aerial assessment of the affected zones. Based on the drone surveillance, necessary strategic plans were formulated to enhance disaster management preparedness and counter any immediate exigencies.

Minister and Area MLA Mr. Pintso Namgyal Lepcha also visited the site to conduct a firsthand inspection of the affected areas and assess the ground situation.

The Mangan District Administration has stated that it continues to closely monitor the situation. All necessary resources and emergency personnel remain deployed in the region to deal with any sudden developments.
