“Pure Electoral Rolls Are the Bedrock of Democracy”: CEC Gyanesh Kumar at National Round Table

New Delhi, February 24, 2026 — Emphasizing the absolute necessity of a flawless and transparent voting mechanism, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar declared today that “pure electoral rolls are the bedrock for any democracy”.

The CEC made these forceful remarks while addressing the historic National Round Table Conference of the Election Commission of India (ECI) and State Election Commissioners, held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

The Push for a ‘Pure’ Voters’ List

Highlighting the ongoing efforts to sanitize the nation’s democratic infrastructure, CEC Kumar focused his address on the critical importance of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

He stated categorically that the primary objective of the election management bodies must be to ensure that every single eligible elector is included in the voters’ list, while strictly weeding out and excluding any ineligible names. A purified electoral roll, he noted, leaves no room for manipulation and ensures that the true mandate of the people is reflected in the election results.

Strengthening the Democratic Infrastructure

The remarks come at a crucial juncture, as the ECI holds its first joint conference with State Election Commissions in 27 years. By focusing on the “purification” of voter lists, the central and state commissions are aiming to build a more unified, transparent, and legally robust electoral framework.

The CEC’s uncompromising stance on the sanctity of the electoral rolls sends a strong message across states currently undergoing the Special Intensive Revision, reinforcing the Commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and unquestionable elections
