Heroic Act at Coronation Bridge: Kalimpong Police Constables Save Man from Jumping to His Death
Sevoke, February 25, 2026 — In a tremendous display of alertness and quick thinking, two on-duty police personnel from the Kalimpong Police district successfully averted a major tragedy by saving a man from jumping off the iconic Coronation Bridge on Tuesday.
The heroic intervention was carried out by Constable Prasenjit Barman and Constable Nibedita Roy, who are attached to the Mongpong Outpost under the jurisdiction of the Reang Police Station.
According to the official statement shared by the Kalimpong Police on their social media handles, the incident occurred on February 24 while the two constables were performing their routine duties along the Coronation Bridge.
During their patrol, the officers noticed a vehicle moving suspiciously on the bridge. Sensing something was amiss, Constables Barman and Roy immediately approached the car to investigate. As they neared the vehicle, the driver suddenly stepped out, rushed to the edge, and attempted to jump off the bridge into the deep gorge below.
Showing immense presence of mind and rapid reflexes, both constables rushed forward and physically intervened, pulling the man back to safety and preventing him from giving away his life.
Following the successful rescue, the distressed individual was safely detained and calmed down by the authorities. The Kalimpong Police immediately contacted his family members, briefed them on the situation, and handed the man over to their care.
The Kalimpong Police Department has officially commended Constables Prasenjit Barman and Nibedita Roy for their outstanding vigilance and life-saving intervention. Their swift action has drawn widespread praise from the local community across the Terai and Hill regions.
In light of the incident, the Kalimpong Police issued a heartfelt public appeal regarding mental health awareness.
