West Bengal Police Arrest Prime Accused in Dhaka’s High-Profile Political Murder Case
Bongaon, March 8, 2026 — In a major breakthrough with significant cross-border implications, the West Bengal Police Special Task Force (STF) has arrested two Bangladeshi nationals identified as the prime suspects in the assassination of prominent Bangladeshi political activist and youth leader, Sharif Osman Hadi.
The arrests were made during a targeted raid in the Bongaon border area of the North 24 Parganas district on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
The Suspects and Their Escape Route
According to the official statement released by the STF, the arrested individuals have been identified as Faisal Karim Masud (37), alias Rahul, a resident of Patuakhali, Bangladesh, and Alamgir Hossain (34), a resident of Dhaka.
Acting on highly credible, secret intelligence, STF personnel intercepted the duo as they were allegedly taking shelter near the Bongaon border, waiting for an opportunity to illegally cross back into Bangladesh.
During preliminary interrogation, both men reportedly confessed to their involvement in Hadi’s murder. Investigators revealed that following the high-profile assassination in December 2025, the accused illegally crossed into Indian territory through the Haluaghat border in Meghalaya. Over the past few months, they moved through various locations across India to evade capture before finally arriving in West Bengal.
Who Was Sharif Osman Hadi?
Sharif Osman Hadi (32) was the convener and spokesperson for Inqilab Moncho and a highly influential figure during the July 2024 student uprising that led to the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
On December 12, 2025, Hadi was shot in the head at point-blank range by masked assailants on a motorcycle just after he left a mosque in the Purana Paltan area of Dhaka. Bangladesh police later identified Faisal Karim Masud as the shooter and Alamgir Hossain as the getaway driver, describing them as active members of the Awami League’s student wing.
Hadi was airlifted to the Singapore General Hospital but succumbed to his injuries on December 18. His assassination sparked massive, violent riots across Bangladesh, leading to the vandalism of several major media houses and cultural centers in Dhaka.
Legal Action Initiated
Following the successful STF operation, a specific case has been registered against the two accused regarding their illegal entry into India and their involvement in the cross-border crime. Both suspects were produced before a local court on Sunday and have been remanded to police custody for further interrogation.
Indian authorities are currently conducting deeper investigations into the local network that may have facilitated their shelter and transit across state lines.
