₹7 Lakh Recovered by Police: The Shocking Way a Birpara Man Lost ₹16.5 Lakh Online

Alipurduar Police Recovers Rs 7 Lakh for Local Resident

Birpara, Alipurduar, March 25, 2026 — In a significant crackdown on rising cybercrime in the region, the Alipurduar District Police has successfully recovered ₹7,00,000/- for a local resident who fell victim to a highly sophisticated online financial fraud.

The prompt investigation highlights the growing threat of digital account hijacking and the importance of immediate police reporting.

The JeM ID Hijacking

The incident came to light on March 22, 2026, when Arun Goyal, a resident of Birpara in the Alipurduar district, filed an urgent fraud complaint with the local authorities.

According to Goyal’s complaint, cybercriminals managed to illegally breach his JeM (online marketplace) ID earlier in the month, on March 3. Once they gained unauthorized access, the fraudsters stealthily linked three of their own bank accounts to his profile. By redirecting the financial channels, the criminals managed to siphon off a staggering total of ₹16,50,000/- from the victim.

The police have publicly identified the two mobile numbers used by the fraudsters to orchestrate the scam: 7838878775 and 8860060271.

Swift Police Action and Recovery

Recognizing the severity of the financial crime, the Alipurduar District Police immediately registered the case and launched a thorough, high-priority inquiry.

Cyber investigators initiated the necessary legal procedures to trace the digital footprints of the scammers and freeze the illicit transactions. As a direct result of their rapid and coordinated investigation, the police successfully tracked down a significant portion of the stolen funds.

Out of the total defrauded amount of ₹16.5 lakh, the authorities have successfully recovered ₹7,00,000/-. The recovered amount has already been safely credited back to Arun Goyal’s bank account. Efforts are likely ongoing to trace the remaining balance and apprehend the culprits behind the phone numbers.

Police Advisory for Citizens

Following the successful partial recovery, the Alipurduar District Police issued a strong advisory urging citizens to exercise extreme caution while conducting business or financial transactions on online platforms.

Authorities have requested the public to regularly monitor their online IDs and linked bank accounts for any unauthorized changes, and to report any suspicious or fraudulent activity to the police immediately to ensure a higher chance of fund recovery.
