Joint Operation Success: Chandigarh Police & AGTF Nab Key Accused in PU Campus Shootout
Chandigarh, March 27, 2026 — In a major breakthrough, law enforcement agencies have successfully apprehended the primary accused behind the recent daylight firing incident at Panjab University (PU). The arrest followed a high-stakes, joint operation and a brief exchange of gunfire.
The coordinated crackdown was executed jointly by the Chandigarh Police, the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) of Punjab, and the Fatehgarh Sahib unit of the Punjab Police.
The Target: A SOPU Student Leader
The shootout traces back to March 17, when a targeted firing incident created panic across the Panjab University campus. The attack was specifically aimed at a student leader belonging to the Student Organization of Panjab University (SOPU).
Following intensive tracking, intelligence units traced the prime suspect—identified as Jaspreet Singh, widely known by his alias “Jass Panaich”—to the Nurpur village area, falling under the jurisdiction of the Amloh Police Station in the Fatehgarh Sahib district. Singh is originally a resident of Kheri Noudh Singh village in Khamano tehsil.
The Dramatic Encounter
As the joint police teams moved in to corner the suspect and execute the arrest, the situation rapidly escalated. According to official police statements, Jaspreet Singh allegedly opened fire on the advancing police party in a desperate bid to escape.
The police forces immediately retaliated in self-defense. During the ensuing crossfire, the accused sustained bullet injuries and was swiftly subdued by the officers. He was immediately shifted to a nearby medical facility for treatment under heavy police guard.
Weapons and Vehicle Recovered
The site of the encounter yielded significant physical evidence. Investigating officers successfully recovered the following from the accused’s possession:
One .32 bore pistol
Two live cartridges
Four empty (spent) cartridges
A Hyundai Creta car bearing the registration number PB23Z0717
Police have confirmed that further investigations are actively underway to identify any other accomplices or criminal networks associated with the university attack.
