“Just Argue With Dario”: Inside Anthropic’s Unusually Open AI Culture
April 6, 2026 — While most corporate environments discourage public dissent against top leadership, artificial intelligence startup Anthropic is actively fostering a culture where employees are expected to openly challenge their executives—including CEO Dario Amodei.
In a recent appearance on Lenny’s Podcast, Amol Avasarala, Anthropic’s head of growth, revealed fascinating details about the inner workings of the company behind the popular Claude AI chatbot. He explained that the AI lab maintains a radically transparent communication style that actively encourages staff to “just argue with Dario”.
The Slack “Notebook” System
At the core of this transparent culture is a unique internal communication system. According to Avasarala, employees at Anthropic—including the CEO—maintain a personal Slack “notebook” channel.
These notebooks are open and accessible to others within the company and function similarly to an internal Twitter feed. “You can go and join the Slack channel, the notebook channels of people in research and all these other areas, and you can learn whatever you want,” Avasarala explained.
The channels serve as a public forum where employees share their internal thoughts, provide updates on what is working, and even post “provocative things” to spark discussion.
Calling Out the CEO
To illustrate just how deeply this culture of open debate runs, Avasarala shared an anecdote following a recent all-hands meeting.
During the meeting, Amodei made a comment that an employee fundamentally disagreed with. Rather than whispering about it at the water cooler or sending a private email, the employee took the disagreement directly to the public forum.
“The person goes onto Dario’s notebook channel and just says, like, ‘Hey, I didn’t appreciate how you said this or that,'” Avasarala recalled. Rather than facing reprimand, the public call-out successfully “sparked a whole big debate” within the company.
Building a “Secret Sauce”
Avasarala emphasized that this level of extreme openness is not just a gimmick; it is an encouraged practice that ultimately builds a deeper level of trust across the organization.
By allowing employees to challenge leadership publicly, Anthropic has fostered a “very deep sense of togetherness”. As the company continues its rapid growth and high valuation in the fiercely competitive AI sector, Avasarala credits this combination of top-tier talent and a fearlessly open culture as the “secret sauce” driving their massive success.
