Guwahati Floods: Schools Ordered Shut, Emergency Helplines Issued After Sudden Downpour Claims a Life
Guwahati, April 20, 2026 — Continuous and heavy rainfall starting Sunday evening has triggered severe urban flooding across several parts of Guwahati, paralyzing normal life and resulting in a tragic fatality. The sudden downpour caused massive waterlogging, leaving countless residents stranded on the streets until late at night.
In response to the severe weather and hazardous conditions, the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration has ordered the immediate closure of all educational institutions.
Tragic Death in Maligaon
The intense artificial flooding claimed the life of a young woman in the Maligaon area. The victim, identified as Payal Nath, a resident of Dharapur, tragically lost her life after accidentally falling into an open, flooded drain.
Upon receiving the information, teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) immediately launched a search and rescue operation. Despite their efforts, they were only able to recover her body later in the night.
Schools Shut and Advisories Issued
Taking swift action in view of the unfavorable weather, District Commissioner Swapneel Paul issued a formal directive announcing the closure of all government and private schools, colleges, and educational institutions in Guwahati for Monday.

The district administration has also issued an urgent advisory, urging all citizens to remain highly cautious and avoid stepping out unless absolutely necessary as the situation is monitored.
Cause of the Flash Flooding
Explaining the severity of the sudden inundation, Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Commissioner Chinmoy Prakash Phukan stated that the rapid waterlogging was primarily caused by a massive volume of water flowing down from the surrounding hills following the intense rain.
While the sudden deluge created panic on Sunday night, authorities reported that water levels in the affected localities gradually began to recede by Monday morning as weather conditions slightly improved.
Emergency Helplines Activated
The district administration has activated dedicated emergency helplines for citizens in distress or requiring urgent public assistance due to the waterlogging:
Helpline 1: 9365429314
Helpline 2: 1077
Authorities are advising residents to keep these numbers handy and report any emergencies immediately.
