Siliguri – The mortal remains of renowned singer, actor, and Indian Idol Season 3 winner Prashant Tamang arrived at Bagdogra Airport on Monday morning, where emotional crowds from the Darjeeling hills, Terai, and Dooars regions gathered to pay their final respects.
The body was received amid heartfelt tributes before departing in a funeral procession towards Darjeeling, Tamang’s hometown. Admirers, family members, and well-wishers offered flowers and condolences as the procession proceeded.
Prashant Tamang, celebrated for his captivating voice, humility, and simplicity, rose from the Darjeeling hills to national prominence in 2007 with his Indian Idol victory. He became an enduring icon for the Gorkha community, inspiring millions through his music albums, playback singing, and acting career. Tamang starred in several popular Nepali films, including Gorkha Paltan, Nishani, Pardesi, and others, and more recently appeared in the acclaimed series Paatal Lok.
Darjeeling MP Raju Bista joined the gathering at the airport and participated in the funeral procession. In a tribute, Bista described Tamang as “an iconic Gorkha youth” who “mesmerized the world” and made every Gorkha proud through his talents. Expressing heartbreak over the loss at such a young age, Bista extended condolences to Tamang’s wife Martha, daughter, family, friends, and admirers, praying for his soul to rest in eternal peace.
The sudden passing of the multifaceted artist has left a deep void in the music, film, and entertainment industries, especially within Nepali-speaking communities across India and Nepal. His legacy continues through his timeless songs, memorable film roles, and the profound impact he had on aspiring artists.
