Mumbai, April 17, 2026 — In a major international milestone for Indian cinema, acclaimed actress Sayani Gupta is set to be honoured as the ‘Person of the Year’ by the prestigious Harvard South Asian Association (SAA).

The recognition celebrates her outstanding contributions to storytelling, her fearless choice of roles, and her rapidly growing impact on global cultural representation. She will be officially felicitated at a grand event at Harvard University later this month.

Championing Inclusive Storytelling

The Harvard South Asian Association, which is the university’s premier organization dedicated to celebrating South Asian culture, creativity, and leadership, awards this honour annually. It spotlights individuals whose body of work has meaningfully influenced how South Asian identity is expressed and understood on the global stage.

In a statement announcing the award, the Harvard SAA wrote: “Sayani’s performances have consistently challenged conventions and brought depth, boldness, and authenticity to contemporary narratives, making her a compelling voice in shaping more inclusive storytelling.”

By receiving this coveted title, the versatile actress joins a highly distinguished list of past recipients, including Michelin-star chef and filmmaker Vikas Khanna, who was honored with the award last year.

A Landmark Year and Directorial Debut

The Harvard honour comes during a monumental phase in Gupta’s career as she steps into a brand-new creative chapter. Expanding her horizons beyond acting, Sayani is making her highly anticipated debut as a writer-director.

Her maiden short film, titled Aasmani, is already creating ripples in the international festival circuit. The project is slated to have its world premiere at the prestigious WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival on April 25. Immediately following its debut, the film will be screened at the Indie Meme Film Festival on April 26.

A Journey of Authenticity

An alumna of the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, Sayani Gupta has meticulously built a diverse and critically acclaimed body of work spanning feature films, theatre, and major streaming platforms. Known for breathing life into complex, unconventional characters, her dedication to authentic representation has resonated with audiences worldwide.

This latest recognition from the Harvard SAA not only cements her status as a powerhouse performer but also establishes her as a highly influential global South Asian voice shaping the future of contemporary narratives.
