‘His Father Had Just Booked Him a Laptop’: Gurugram Class 10 Student Takes Own Life Over CBSE Marks

Gurugram, April 16, 2026 — In a heartbreaking incident that highlights the immense pressure students face during board exams, a 16-year-old boy in Gurugram died by suicide shortly after the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the Class 10 results.

The tragedy occurred on Wednesday evening in Haryana’s Jatoli area, falling under the jurisdiction of the Pataudi police station.

The Tragedy Unfolds

The deceased student, identified as Kunal, lived in Baba Hardeva Colony and attended a local private school. Following the declaration of the CBSE Class 10 results on Wednesday, Kunal was reportedly deeply distressed.

According to statements given by his family, Kunal had actually performed well and cleared his exams. However, he was severely disappointed because his final score did not meet his own high expectations. His parents had reportedly been supportive, encouraging him not to lose heart and even suggesting he could reappear for the exams to improve his score.

Adding to the heartbreak, officials revealed that his father, an employee with the Indian Railways, had just booked a new laptop for him as a post-results gift.

Found in a Locked Room

Despite his family’s reassurances, Kunal fell into a deep depression over the course of the day.

On Wednesday evening, while his family members were on the lower floor of their house, the teenager quietly went upstairs to a room on the terrace. When he failed to return after an extended period, his concerned family went up to check on him, only to find the room locked from the inside.

After repeatedly knocking and receiving no response, the family broke open the door. They found Kunal hanging inside the room.

The local Pataudi police were immediately informed and rushed to the spot. The body was subsequently sent for a postmortem examination.

Investigation Ongoing

A senior police officer confirmed the details of the tragic incident, stating, “It is suspected that the student took this extreme step after seeing his results and not scoring as expected.”

Investigators confirmed that no suicide note was recovered from the scene. A formal investigation into the exact circumstances leading up to the incident is currently underway.

The tragedy has reignited critical conversations around the intense academic pressure placed on teenagers and the urgent need to prioritize student mental health and counseling during the high-stress board result season.
