PM Modi and CM Stalin Announce Relief Operations as Factory Blast Kills 23 in TN
Virudhunagar (Tamil Nadu), April 19, 2026 — A catastrophic explosion at a firecracker manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district on Sunday afternoon has claimed the lives of at least 23 workers and left several others severely injured.
The tragic incident occurred at around 3:00 PM in the Kattanarpatti area at a licensed facility identified as “Vanaja Fireworks”. According to local authorities, the impact of the blasts was so intense that the bodies of the victims were blown apart, causing severe challenges in immediate identification.
Rescue Operations Hindered by Continuous Blasts
Upon receiving frantic calls from the public, police, fire, and rescue personnel rushed to the site to douse the flames. However, emergency services faced a long and perilous struggle to put out the fire. Because the premises housed massive quantities of highly combustible remnant chemicals and unfinished fireworks, secondary explosions continued for hours, hampering swift rescue efforts.
The injured individuals were immediately rescued and transported to the Virudhunagar Government Medical College hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. While initial reports indicated a death toll of 16, authorities later confirmed that the number of casualties had climbed to at least 23 as more bodies were recovered from the debris.
PM Modi and CM Stalin Announce Relief Measures
The horrific accident has drawn the attention of the nation’s top leadership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to the social media platform X to express his profound grief over the tragedy.
“The mishap in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu is deeply distressing. I extend my condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest,” the Prime Minister wrote. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and President Droupadi Murmu also extended their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin immediately initiated state-level relief protocols. CM Stalin directed the Virudhunagar District Collector to ensure all necessary medical and logistical assistance is provided to the victims. Furthermore, the Chief Minister deputed two state ministers, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran and Thangam Thennarasu, to rush to the incident site to personally coordinate and expedite the rescue and relief operations.
Investigation Underway
The Vachakarapatti police have officially cordoned off the area and launched a thorough investigation into the disaster.
While “Vanaja Fireworks” is a licensed unit, a critical angle of the ongoing investigation is to determine whether the factory management had obtained the necessary legal permissions to keep the unit operational and engage workers on a Sunday, which is a mandatory weekly holiday for such hazardous industries.
