New Delhi, April 18, 2026 — Balbir Punj, a distinguished journalist-turned-politician, renowned columnist, and veteran leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), passed away on Saturday. He was 76.

His demise marks the end of a long and influential career that seamlessly bridged the worlds of media, public policy, and national politics. Regarded as a core intellectual voice within the BJP, Punj leaves behind a profound legacy in India’s socio-political landscape.

A Journey from Journalism to Politics

Born in October 1949 in East Punjab, Balbir Punj began his career in the media, quickly making a name for himself as a sharp and insightful journalist. From the early 1990s, he became a prominent columnist, writing extensively for various leading Hindi and English newspapers and magazines. He specialized in dissecting complex social, economic, and political issues, often bringing a distinct ideological clarity to his writings.

He served two terms as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha:

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath paid a heartfelt tribute to the departed leader, recognizing his immense contributions to the nation.

“The demise of former MP, senior BJP politician, and eminent columnist Shri Balbir Punj ji is extremely sad and an irreparable loss to the world of politics and journalism. A humble tribute! I pray to Lord Shri Ram to grant peace to the departed soul and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this immense sorrow. Om Shanti!” the Chief Minister wrote in a social media post.

Former UP BJP State President Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary also expressed his grief, calling the news of Punj’s sudden demise “extremely sad and painful.”
