No Property, No Criminal Cases: Mamata Banerjee Files Nomination, Declares Net Worth
Kolkata, April 9, 2026 — As the high-stakes Bengal Assembly elections heat up, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee has officially filed her nomination papers from the Bhowanipore constituency.
Known for her trademark simple lifestyle, wearing white cotton sarees and rubber flip-flops, the latest election affidavit submitted by the Chief Minister confirms a remarkably modest financial profile. According to the document, the political heavyweight owns no residential property, no car, and no agricultural land.
A Breakdown of the Assets
The Election Commission of India made Banerjee’s sworn affidavit public on Wednesday evening. The document details her educational qualifications, income history, and exact financial holdings as she prepares for the upcoming polls.
According to the filed affidavit, Mamata Banerjee holds just ₹75,700 in physical cash.
Her movable assets include bank deposits spread across accounts in the Indian Bank’s Harish Mukherjee Road branch in Kolkata. She has a balance of ₹12,36,209 in her savings account and an additional ₹40,000 in a separate account explicitly opened for managing her election expenditures.
In terms of valuables, the TMC leader declared ownership of a mere 9.75 grams of gold, which has a current market value of approximately ₹1.45 lakh.
When combined, her total declared movable assets amount to roughly ₹15,37,509.
Zero Immovable Assets and No Debts
The affidavit paints a stark picture of a major politician holding virtually no physical capital. Banerjee has stated that she does not have any immovable property registered in her name. This includes an absence of any houses, apartments, commercial buildings, or agricultural land. She also noted that she has not inherited any real estate.
Furthermore, she does not own any personal vehicles, does not hold shares in any companies, and has no active investments in financial institutions. The Chief Minister also confirmed that she is entirely debt-free, with no outstanding loans or dues owed to any government agency.
Crucially, the document also notes a clean legal slate, confirming that there are no pending criminal cases registered against her.
Income Fluctuations and the Opponent’s Profile
The election filings also reveal fluctuations in Banerjee’s annual income over the past few years, according to her income tax returns. In the financial year 2024-25, her total income was recorded at ₹23,21,570. This was a slight increase from ₹20,72,740 in 2023-24. Her income peaked in 2021-22 at ₹38,14,410.
Banerjee, who holds an MA from Calcutta University and an LLB from Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri Law College, is facing off against a massive political rival in Bhowanipore: the BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari.
In stark contrast to the Chief Minister’s affidavit, Adhikari—who is contesting from both Bhowanipore and Nandigram—declared movable assets worth over ₹24.57 lakh and ownership of agricultural land, non-agricultural land, and three residential properties. Furthermore, his affidavit disclosed 25 pending criminal cases registered against him across various police stations in Bengal.
