Weekend Traffic Alert: Avoid Darjeeling More and Sevoke Road Today; Check Alternate Routes

Siliguri, April 18, 2026 — Weekend commuters, tourists, and daily travelers navigating through Siliguri today are strongly advised to plan their journeys with extra buffer time. The Siliguri Traffic Police has released a comprehensive traffic bulletin for Saturday, warning of slow-moving traffic along major city corridors due to ongoing highway repairs, infrastructure development, and local weekend markets.

To prevent major gridlocks, authorities have issued strict route advisories, particularly for vehicles moving toward Bagdogra Airport, New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station, and the surrounding hill stations.

Key Bottlenecks and Construction Zones

Commuters are urged to be highly alert and maintain safe following distances as multiple active work zones will disrupt normal traffic flow:

  • Darjeeling More Crossing: A perennial congestion point, this major junction is currently undergoing extensive development work. The police have requested all commuters to use alternate routes wherever possible to avoid getting stuck.

  • NH-10 (Siliguri Gate to Champasari More & Salugara): Highway repair and improvement activities are actively underway along these stretches. Drivers are instructed to reduce speed significantly while passing through the carriageway work zones.

  • Sahudangi–Ambari Link Bridge (Teesta Canal): The bridge at Canal More remains closed to facilitate the construction of a new bridge. Traffic moving between Belacoba/Siliguri and Ambari/Sahudangi must take a detour via Nawapara More.

Weekend Market Alert

Adding to the infrastructural delays, weekend market activities are expected to slow down specific routes this afternoon. Vehicular movement around the Salbari Mini Haat will remain heavily affected between 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM today.

Crucial Route Guidelines for Tourists and Commuters

To ensure passengers reach the airport and railway stations on time, the Siliguri Traffic Police has laid out strict diversions for light vehicles:

  • To the Hills (Darjeeling, Kurseong, Mirik): Vehicles coming from either Bagdogra Airport or NJP Station must utilize the Noukaghat route via Kawakhali and Khaprail Road.

  • To Bagdogra Airport: Vehicles coming from Jalpaiguri or descending from Darjeeling must avoid the Darjeeling More junction entirely. Commuters are advised to use Khaprail Road instead.

  • To NJP Station: Commuters are kindly requested to avoid Sevoke Road. Instead, use the Phansidewa Underpass via Kawakhali and Noukaghat.

  • From Sikkim & Kalimpong: Vehicles heading toward NJP Station or Bagdogra Airport must bypass the city’s inner roads and use the Eastern Bypass via the Bhaktinagar Check Post.

Strict Restrictions on Goods Vehicles

To ease the weekend burden on city roads, the movement of heavy goods vehicles into the town has been strictly restricted:

  • Trucks and lorries arriving from the Bagdogra or Paribahan Nagar side are advised not to use Darjeeling More and must be routed through the Phansidewa Underpass.

  • Goods vehicles descending from Sikkim and Kalimpong are barred from using Champasari and Darjeeling More, and must strictly take the Eastern Bypass.

The Siliguri Traffic Police has appealed to the public for their cooperation in following these regulations to ensure a safe and smooth travel experience throughout the weekend.
